Description
Vienna Anthropology Days 2027
Call for Sessions and Labs open until August 4, 2026
The Vienna Anthropology Days (VANDA) is an international conference and festival held biennially in Vienna, bringing together around 300 anthropologists, social and cultural scientists, and interdisciplinary artists. It fosters scholarly exchange, critical reflection, and collaborative formats, alongside an ethnographic film programme and social events. VANDA is organised by the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna, in collaboration with the Institute for Social Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Department for Sociology and Anthropology at Central European University, and the Weltmuseum.
Due to a transition in the organizing team, the next edition will take place from 16–19 February 2027. We plan to return to the usual September schedule in 2028. VANDA is now organized by Andreas Streinzer and Antonia Patzak, and we warmly thank Peter Schweitzer and Khaled Hakami who have been the driving force of VANDA since its inception.
The keynote at VANDA 2027 will be delivered by Prof. Miriam Ticktin.
There is no general conference theme; we welcome proposals on all research topics, especially those that encourage collaboration, innovative formats, underrepresented perspectives, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
Please submit proposals by August 4, 2026 to vanda.ksa [at] univie.ac.at. Notifications will be sent in late August, followed by a separate Call for Papers.
We look forward to your submissions and to welcoming you to VANDA 2027. Best wishes, The VANDA Organising Team
Call for Sessions and Labs
Sessions
Both open and closed session proposals are welcome. Open sessions invite paper submissions during the subsequent Call for Papers. Closed sessions are fully constituted at submission and do not accept additional contributions.
Session convenors may choose the format (e.g., paper panel, roundtable, or other). Each session must have at least two convenors (min. one with a PhD) present at the conference. Standard session length is 90 minutes, each session can have more than one slot.
Labs
Labs are participatory and experimental formats for collective exploration, creativity, and critical engagement. They may involve workshops, collaborative making, artistic practices, mapping, walking, urban exploration, multimodal approaches, film, sensory methods, or other innovative approaches.
Labs may take place on campus or in the city and are encouraged to use Vienna as a site for learning, experimentation, and encounter.
