Call for Special Issue Proposals

Sociologus - Journal for Social Anthropology (Winter 2027 Issue)

Sociologus invites proposals for a special issue scheduled for publication in winter 2027.

Our new editorial team welcomes proposals that are grounded in original ethnographic research and that make a contribution to contemporary debates in social and cultural anthropology. Submissions may address any empirical field, region, theoretical orientation or thematic area. Successful proposals will demonstrate a coherent analytical orientation and assemble a range of 4-6 original research articles. Diversity of voices and perspectives is encouraged; this includes diversity in terms of institutional affiliation.

The special issue will contain an editorial introduction that articulates the conceptual framing and links between the contributions and individual articles. Special issues may include traditional research articles as well as other formats, such as think pieces, commentaries, essays, or afterwords.

Special issues may not exceed a total length of c. 40,000 words (c. 260,000 characters, incl. Spaces).

Special issue proposals should be 2,000-3,000 words and contain:

  • Names, institutional affiliations, and contact details of guest editor(s) and contributors

  • Proposed title of the special issue

  • A sketch of the special issue’s rationale, including an overview of the issue’s analytical contribution and relevance for current anthropological debates (ca. 1,500 words)

  • Titles and short abstracts (max. 150–200 words) for each article and an indication of words allotted to each article

  • Indication of whether full drafts are already available or still in preparation, and if the latter, by when a full draft will be submitted

Special issue proposals are due by 30 November 2026. Please send them to sociologus[ at ]em.uni-frankfurt.de

Selection process: The submission deadline is 30 November 2026 and the selected proposal will be announced in January 2027. Full manuscripts will be due by 15 April 2027.

Please note that the selection of a special issue proposal does not automatically imply acceptance of all individual papers. All manuscripts will undergo peer review, and we aim to communicate editorial decisions by June 2027. Revisions and final acceptance are expected to take place in summer 2027, with publication scheduled for winter 2027.
