Description
Structural Analysis of Cultural Systems
Intercultural Work:
Field Research Training (Certificate Programme)
The aim of this seminar is to impart key competencies in intercultural work, with a particular focus on field research in non-European Indigenous contexts. The theoretical sections provide knowledge of the psychological as well as the international legal and political situation of indigenous cultural groups. Furthermore, the programme includes insights into the work of the United Nations.
These trainings—the only ones of their kind—have been conducted since 2001, with special emphasis on culturally sensitive approaches to fieldwork in Indigenous contexts, in accordance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Successful completion of the seminar entitles participants to join S.A.C.S. field excursions to Indigenous communities. In past years, such excursions have been carried out by the research institution Structural Analysis of Cultural Systems (https://s-a-c-s.net/) with groups including the Soliga in India, the Bagyeli in Cameroon, the Batwa and Teso in Uganda, the Hamer in Ethiopia, the Emberá in Panama, and the Yagua in Peru. The programme conveys methods and techniques of field research, approaches to data collection in intercultural studies, and an understanding of the relevant international legal frameworks. It is designed both for future professionals working in intercultural contexts and for those pursuing cross-cultural comparative research. To ensure methodological validity, adherence to research ethics, and compliance with international law, the correct implemen- tation of indigenous rights is indispensable. The seminar follows a sequential structure; participants may pause their attendance at any time but may not skip individual units. The certificate is issued by the UN-accredited organisation S.A.C.S.
