The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.

Scientific Editor (m/f/d)

(starting as early as possible after 1 December 2023)

Your tasks

  • Editing, and commenting on the content of, department members’ scientific manuscripts in English, including grant proposals; organizing additional editorial assistance if required
  • Drafting, revising, and editing webpage texts, reports for institutional reviews, event announcements and summaries, and other communications in English and German
  • Contributing to regular intellectual conversations within the department, and to developing the “Common Concerns” approach, for instance by monitoring and reporting on public and anthropological debates that are relevant to members’ research
  • Conducting and coordinating training courses for the institute’s researchers on academic writing and scientific presentations
  • Facilitating communication across the institute’s work and research units
  • Participating in developing public-facing and academic publications and communications (depending on personal skills and interests)

Your profile

  • Successfully completed studies in social anthropology or a closely related discipline; a PhD degree is strongly preferred
  • Evidence of very good command of written and spoken English and German (native speaker level/ level C2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Strong writing and editorial skills
  • Experience of editing scientific manuscripts
  • Teamwork orientation and dedication to support colleagues’ writing projects
  • Familiarity with anthropological theories, ethnographic methods, and publication practices
  • Familiarity with major public and intellectual debates in different parts of the world and ability to identify their relevance to the department’s research agenda
  • Experience in writing non-academic publications is a plus
  • confident handling of Microsoft Office, content management systems and research management software

Our offer

The position is limited to an initial period of 2 years. Employment will be on a full-time contractual basis. Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Wage Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD, level E13).

The workplace is Halle (Saale), a dynamic, historical town in central Germany (Sachsen-Anhalt) that is home to the renowned Martin Luther University and numerous scientific institutions. Our modern campus is in a quiet, picturesque neighbourhood near the centre of town.
