The Institute of Anthropology and Cultural Research of Faculty 9 (Cultural Studies) at the University of Bremen is looking to fill a postdoctoral position associated with the Working Group of Public Anthropology (Prof. Dr. Nasima Selim), beginning April 1, 2026 or earlier as:
Postdoctoral Research Associate
with 100% of weekly working hours (39,2 hours) for a fixed term of three years with the possibility of extension only under certain conditions of qualification
in the area of Public Anthropology – Culture in Practice and Transfer.
The position is suitable for part-time work.
Details are to be agreed upon with the relevant department, if applicable.
The temporary position is for academic qualification in accordance with § 2 para. 1 of WissZeitVG (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). Accordingly, only applicants who still have the relevant qualification periods in accordance with Section 2 (1) WissZeitVG can be considered.

Tasks

Academic services in teaching to the extent of 4 SWS (including imparting specialist knowledge and practical skills as well as instruction in the application of scientific methods in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs to the extent of the applicable LVNV, teaching export (= subject-specific teaching for other teaching units))
In addition:

Participation in the organisation and implementation of examinations

Preparation of teaching materials

Supervision of oral and written student seminar performances
-
Scientific services in research, participation in research projects, in particular through participation in research projects of the professorship
2. Own scientific work in the context of a postdoctoral research project. The academic research work should be in the field of Public Anthropology with a focus on Environmental Humanities with particular reference to the research agenda of the Professorship of Public Anthropology
3. Other university tasks, such as participation in academic self-administration
Requirements
-
A completed PhD degree (with a focus on Public Anthropology and Environmental Humanities) along with a university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Social and Cultural Anthropology, or a degree in a related field closely connected to the aforementioned research areas

Applicants who are in the final phase of their doctoral studies will also be considered. Please note that submission of the doctoral certificate is required for employment.

Excellent knowledge of anthropological theory and ethnographic methods

Experience in ethnographic research
-
Experience in teaching and supervising students.

Very good language skills in English and German, additional language skill.

Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a team

Interest in transdisciplinary research and collaboration
Additional qualifications:

Excellent knowledge of one or more of the following research-relevant disciplines – particularly in biology or other natural sciences, environmental sciences, Science and Technology Studies, political science, sociology, empirical philosophy, or public health

Mixed method research skills

Experience in social engagement as well as participation in community (science) projects.
