Description
LIAS Fellowship 2023/24
The Leuphana Institute of Advanced Studies in Culture and Society at Leuphana University Lüneburg invites applications for fellowships of up to 12 months for the academic year 2023/24 with fellowships beginning as of April 1st 2023.
The LIAS in Culture and Society promotes outstanding postdoctoral research up to early associate professorships/W2 in the humanities and social sciences. LIAS in Culture and Society aims at countering a discourse of no alternatives. It pursues new perspectives, ideas and agency beyond short-term crisis management. It fosters engaged scholarship to uncover, support and multiply modes of social potentialization – by questioning existing certainties and therefore activating new possibilities.
LIAS invites researchers to investigate the historical, contemporary, socio-cultural, epistemological, political-economic, legal, and technical-scientific conditions of living together in a globalized, entangled world.
The LIAS in Culture and Society is inspired by the idea of thinking across hemispheres and making plural societies both thinkable and realizable. The inspiration relies on an ethos of problematization, critical diagnosis of the present, genealogies of contemporary lines of conflict, methodological openness, and cultural inventiveness. The applicants’ research project should correspond with the aim and program of the LIAS in Culture and Society as outlined here.
PARTICIPATION IN AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE CENTRE
Fellows of the LIAS of Culture and Society are usually relieved of teaching and administrative duties at their home institution to focus on working on their research topic. They are expected to actively participate in the events of the LIAS, such as the regular colloquia and interdisciplinary working groups, and to take part in or organize public formats. The fellows collaborate with senior fellows, an artist fellow, a faculty fellow, and a public fellow.
To enhance collaboration and co-creation, double fellowships by two researchers from different home institutions are possible. Also, candidates can nominate an associate fellow (academic or non-academic)(not mandatory) with whom they wish to collaborate on a short-term basis during their stay. Thus, LIAS supports flexible forms of worldwide collaboration. A more detailed description of the diverse fellowships can be found here.
LIAS-fellows will benefit from the many opportunities for interdisciplinary and international exchange, both with the invited researchers and the artists who also reside at the institute. Also, fellows are invited to collaborate with researchers at Leuphana University, which provides a lively research environment, and to participate in the universities' activities (including, for example, guest lectures in seminars and attending colloquia of our research centers). A communication manager will assist the fellows in their publishing needs and will communicate the research to a broader audience. Also, a fellow support manager will offer assistance in navigating practical matters concerning life at university and in Lüneburg. Fellows will be supported in their research by student assistants who will help in navigating campus research resources.

Remuneration is based on the guidelines for scholarships of the state of Lower Saxony and amounts to € 2,100 per month (tax free) plus accommodation and, if applicable, family allowance. A fully equipped workplace at the central university building by Daniel Libeskind is provided. For fellows who bring their partner and/or family the university provides support.

APPLICATION MODALITIES
Applications are open to scholars at the level of post-doctoral researcher, assistant professor or early associate professorships/W2 who already have distinguished themselves with outstanding work corresponding to the programmatic outline of the institute. Fluency in English is required to take part in the LIAS and university activities.
Applicants are selected by an international advisory board and the academic directors. Selection criteria are as follows: the originality of the research approach, the academic quality, the correspondence to the outline of the LIAS, and the potential for co-creation and collaboration with other fellows and members of the university community. In addition to the usual application documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications), we ask you to enclose an exposé (approx. 5 pages + bibliography) in which you present your research project in a clear and focused manner and elaborate on its relation to the LIAS in Culture and Society. The exposé should also include a short work plan for the time of your stay. Also, we kindly ask you to fill out this template.
The selection of candidates will take place in October 22, and you will be informed immediately once the process has been completed.
