14th EthnoDoks 2022: Methods and processes.

Since 2008, the EthnoDoks* meetings facilitate encounters, exchange and networking between PhD students involved in ethnographic research projects in anthropology and related disciplines (such as sociology, religious studies, cultural and literature studies, education, et cetera). In line with the tradition of the EthnoDoks* meetings, our main goal of the 2022 workshop will be connecting PhD students and other early stage researchers across institutions in a space designed to be free of hierarchies. Apart from PhD students, we also welcome undergraduate students in their final years and postdoctoral researchers at the beginning of their academic careers. In focus groups, different aspects and challenges of ethnographic work and academic careers will be discussed and experiences from individual research projects can be shared with peers. Therefore, we particularly value an open and spontaneous structuring of the focus groups to give all participants the opportunity to advance on what they currently are most in need concerning their research process. To include more students and researchers from abroad the main language during the meeting will be English.

The 14th EthnoDoks* meeting will take place at the University of Graz (Austria) on October 14th and October 15th. It is organised as a follow-up event to the annual conferences of the two International Graduate Schools “Transformations in European Societies” and “Resonant Self-World Relations in Ancient and Modern Socio-Religious Practices”. Thanks to this collaboration we are able to offer additionally to the focus groups a series of practical workshops, which relate to methods of ethnography and the process of writing a dissertation by professors and researchers from different European universities. Workshops will include topics such as creative ethnography; body, senses and affect in ethnography; relational/associative interpretation of fieldwork materials (based on ethno-psychoanalysis and pragmatist semiotics).

Amid our invitees offering the preplanned workshops are ….

Katharina Eisch-Angus (University of Graz, Austria)

Mairéad Nic Craith (University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland)

Nevena Škrbić Alempijević (University of Zagreb, Croatia)

Ullrich Kockel (University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland)

Lydia Arantes (University of Graz, Austria)

If you wish to participate please write to us by August 14th to ethnodoks(at)gmail.com  indicating your name and affiliation, your dissertation’s broad topic and your current stage in your project, as well as your experiences (theoretical and/or practical) with ethnographic research (max. 1 page). In order to fruitfully pre-organise exchanges, please add any challenges you are currently facing that you wish to discuss at the workshop. We aim to connect those of you in need of accommodation in Graz with people able to host you, and there will be limited possibilities of reimbursing travel costs (however, if you have the possibility to be reimbursed by the institute you are affiliated to, please use that chance). When confirming your registration, we will ask for an attendance fee of 14 euros to be paid by October, 1st. This fee facilitates planning and covers the costs of a welcome dinner on Friday evening. The workshops shall be held in presence at the University of Graz if the pandemic situation will allow so.

Prolonged inscription deadline until September 4th 2022.
