Description

The University of Lucerne is the youngest university in Switzerland. Founded in 2000, it has four faculties and around 3,000 students. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with its eight institutes and departments focuses on interdisciplinarity and innovation in research and teaching. The Faculty offers its almost 800 students a range of courses that are unique in Switzerland, placing great emphasis on excellent support and a close link between research and teaching activities.

1. Position

Lecturer / Research Assistant in Social / Cultural Anthropology (50%) (more)


A five-year position is available as part of Prof. Bettina Beer's team, within the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Lucerne's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The appointee is expected to take up the position on March 1, 2022.

Responsibilities: The appointee is required to conduct and develop research projects (individually and as part of a team); to teach one course per semester and assist students working on theses.

Qualifications: The candidate should possess a PhD (or have submitted the thesis for examination). Preference may be given to specialists in South East Asia or the Pacific; preference may also be given to someone specialising in one or more of these areas: kinship and political economy; psychological/cognitive anthropology; human-environment relationships. The candidate should also take the team's commitment to the public communication of anthropological perspectives and their relevance to contemporary affairs seriously.

The appointee will join a collegial international team working co-operatively to further research (including interdisciplinary projects) and develop innovative approaches to teaching.

University of Lucerne, Switzerland beginning 1st of February 2022
The candidate will conduct 12 months of ethnographic research on adoption in Russia as part of a four-year project led by Bettina Beer and Laura Preissler, entitled: De-kinning? Adoption, Estrangement, Divorce, and Irreconcilable Conflict among Intimates

REQUIREMENTS

  • The candidate should have a 1st Class Hons or MA (or equivalent) in anthropology or a suitable cognate discipline and be prepared to relocate to Lucerne
  • Regional specialization on Russia and/or Eastern Europe, preferably with some fieldwork experience and an interest in recent kinship literature
  • Proficiency in English and Russian
