The Centre for South-East European Studies is looking for a

doctoral researcher (m/f/d)

30 hours a week

For our research project "Elastic Borders - Rethinking the Borders of the 21st Century" we are setting up an interdisciplinary team of six researchers to conduct a comprehensive study of the EU's external borders. The project explores the legal, technological and socio-political dimensions of increasingly mobile border practices in two research units. Research Unit 1 examines the legal and technological preconditions of contemporary border practices, while Research Unit 2 explores their socio-political consequences with three ethnographies  in Greece (Samos), Spain (Teneriffe) and Tunisia (Medenine). The project is directed by Prof. Dr. Bilgin Ayata and funded by the Nomis Foundation.

Your duties

 
  • Implementation of a subproject on the socio-political impacts of changing border practices in Teneriffe, Canary Islands (ethnographic research)
  • Compiling of data sets, data collection and data analysis for own subproject but also contributing to other subprojects within the project
  • Complete a dissertation within the scope of the subproject
  • Regular interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration within the project team
  • Compiling and contributing to reports, academic articles and edited volumes
  • Contribution to the organization of workshops, conferences and research studios
  • Contribution to project management tasks

Your Profile

 
  • Excellent MA degree in in Social Sciences (Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology or related fields)
  • Sound knowledge of academic scholarship on borders and migration
  • Previous experience with ethnographic fieldwork
  • Excellent command of Spanish, additional knowledge of French or Arabic is an advantage
  • Previous research or work experience on the Canary Islands is an advantage
  • Interest or experience in interdisciplinary work in an international team
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Self-initiative
  • Ability to work in teams

Classification

Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): B1

Minimum Salary

The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 3.058,60 gross/month (for full-time employment). This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations.
