The Department of East Asian Studies (Sinology section), University of Vienna, seeks to appoint a University Assistant (post-doc) position in modern and contemporary Chinese cultures of the duration of 6 years. The advertised position is situated within the team of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rossella Ferrari. The successful candidate is expected to take up appointment on 1 September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Applications are invited from scholars working on topics related to the modern and contemporary cultures of China and the Sinophone region since the twentieth century. Possible areas of expertise include literature, popular culture and media, art history and visual cultures, cultural and intellectual history, and cultural studies. Expertise in more than one region (e. g. China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, diaspora, inter-Asia) is especially welcome.
Applicants will hold a doctorate (PhD) in Chinese/Asian Studies or related disciplines with a humanities focus. They will have an outstanding record of, or clear potential for, world-leading research and publications and proven experience of conducting research in China and the Chinese-speaking region. The successful candidate must have excellent Chinese- and English-language skills (oral and written). Professional working proficiency in German is strongly desired.
The successful candidate will be expected to work on an independent research programme, contribute publications and other relevant scholarly outputs, and help organize academic events (e.g., seminars, workshops, conferences). They will seek opportunities to obtain research funding and participate in third-party funding applications. They will be expected to design and teach courses in the “History and Society” and/or “Literature and Culture” strands of the Chinese Studies curriculum and take on administrative duties.Duration of employment: 6 year/s
Extent of Employment: 40.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
- Active participation in research, teaching, and administration
- Development and strengthening of an independent research profile

- Production of international publications (a book or a portfolio of articles/chapters) and other scholarly outputs

Profile:
The candidate must have:
- Doctorate (PhD) in Chinese/Asian Studies or a related humanities’ discipline with a focus on China and the Chinese-speaking region
- Outstanding academic record or evidence of clear promise in the relevant subject field
- Publications in the relevant subject field
- Advanced competence of research methods and academic writing in the relevant subject field
- Experience in conducting research in the region or regions of expertise
- Experience of working on research projects
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken Chinese
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
- Experience of university teaching
- Experience in student support
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- IT skills
In addition, the successful candidate should have:
- Very good knowledge of written and spoken German
- Publications in renowned subject-relevant outlets (e.g. international peer-reviewed journals)
- Track record of international presentations/conference participation
