Who are the streets for? Challenging the exclusion of trans and disabled individuals in public spaces in Buenos Aires

Abstract: In Buenos Aires, in the 1990s, trans & travesti activists and disability rights activists both began separately campaigning around issues that limited their access to public urban spaces: laws against "cross-dressing" in public and physically inaccessible streets. Today, both movements have achieved part of their goals, although the struggle continues, especially for those most marginalized. In this talk, we'll explore how cisnormativity and ableism ?among other ways of controlling "problem bodies"? have shaped the streets of Buenos Aires throughout the past century, and how the trans & disabilities rights movements have re-defined who belongs in these spaces. At the same time, both movements' demands help us understand: why does being included or excluded from public spaces matter? Drawing from the new mobilities paradigm, we explore how these spaces, beyond their symbolic importance, are key for sustaining individuals' everyday lives.
