Materiality – Museology – Knowledge
CAS Research Focus, Center for Advanced Studies
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
03 May 2021
Workshop organized by Prof. Dr. Ruth Bielfeldt (LMU), Prof. Dr. Michael John Gorman (BIOTOPIA/LMU), Prof. Dr. Ulrich Pfisterer (LMU), Prof. Dr. Philipp Schorch (LMU), Prof. Dr. Bernhart Schwenk (Pinakothek der Moderne), Prof. Dr. Philipp W. Stockhammer (LMU) and Dr. Uta Werlich (Museum Fünf Kontinente).
This symposium kicks off an initiative aimed at studying and experimentally enacting the relationship between materiality, museology and knowledge. Museums were constitutive of academic disciplines that engage with different kinds of materiality, such as anthropology, archaeology, art history and natural history. Yet, with the disciplinary evolutions towards other methodological approaches and theoretical frameworks, museums have often been relegated to sites that (re)present the knowledge produced elsewhere, in universities or research institutes. This ‘Research Focus’ re-approaches museums through their underpinning museology, as epistemological apparatus—featuring spatial modalities, material practices and aesthetic sensibilities—which are constitutive of knowledge and brimming with epistemic potentials to be activated in the pursuit of all kinds of questions.
The centrepiece of the ‘Research Focus’ is the close cooperation with Munich museums including the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Museum Fünf Kontinente and BIOTOPIA - Naturkundemuseum Bayern.
