The Institute of Sociology is looking for a
University Assistant without doctorate (m/f/d)
30 hours a week
fixed-term employment for 4 years*
position to be filled as of 01.11.2022
The position is affiliated with the newly appointed Professorship for Digital Societies and the Department of Sociology at the University of Graz. At the core of the research activities of the Digital Societies research group is the increasing societal relevance of digital data and algorithmic systems for processes of decision making, representation, sense making, and resource distribution. This transformation has fuelled utopian visions about open and transparent societies that strengthen grassroots movements and democratic processes. At the same time, fears associated with increased surveillance and control as well as reinforced social inequalities and systemic discrimination have emerged.The focus of the research group is on digitalisation and datafication processes in the areas of education, ageing societies and the public sector. Central to the research is the question of how we can create more inclusive and participatory digital futures. Theoretically and conceptually, this research is situated in Critical Data Studies and Critical Algorithm Studies, feminist STS and new materialism. The teaching responsibilities of the research group cover courses in Sociology and Computational Social Systems.
Your duties
- Participate in projects conducted by the research group on Digital Societies
- Writing a dissertation in the field of Critical Data/Algorithm Studies with a focus on education, ageing society or the public sector/public administration
- Teach courses and conduct examinations as part of the Sociology and Master’s Program Computational Social Systems (CSS, in cooperation with Technical University Graz)
- Student support and supervision
- Cooperation on organisational and administrative tasks as well as evaluation measures
Your Profile
- Completed diploma or master’s degree in the field of Sociology or a comparable field
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written German and English
- Very good IT skills
- Highly committed and motivated approach to academic work
- Sense of personal responsibility and ability to work with others
- Communication skills and ability to work in a team

Classification
Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): B1
Minimum Salary
The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 3.058,60 gross/month (for full-time employment). This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations.
