Postdoc Position (“Akademische*r Rat/Rätin“
at the Chair for Social and Cultural Anthropology; University of Bayreuth
The Chair of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Bayreuth invites applications for a fulltime postdoctoral research position („Akademische:r Rat”) starting on 01.04.2025. The position is initially limited to three years, which can be extended for a further three years, and is remunerated according to salary group A 13.
At the Chair of Social and Cultural Anthropology, we examine global inequalities from a critical perspective. In particular, we are interested in the production of categories of diKerence and their manifold eKects. Focusing on the intersection of knowledge and politics, we ask how diKerent political subjectivities are formed at this juncture. Our teaching focuses primarily on the areas of political and economic anthropology, the history of anthropology, critical race studies, postcolonial and feminist theories, and science and technology studies (STS) – we are also happy to integrate new fields. Additionally, we are also promoting public anthropology as a research field and a critical practice.
We are seeking a dedicated postdoc scholar to strengthen and enrich these focus areas. The position oKers opportunities for independent academic research and for acquiring further qualifications (e.g. preparing a profile for a research group leader or habilitation), including teaching experience. Further academic qualification is expressly encouraged.
Your profile
- Excellent PhD in social and cultural anthropology
- Proficiency in written and spoken English (C1) and German (B2)
- Research interests aligned with the Chair (especially in the areas of political anthropology, anthropology of the life sciences, science and technology studies, politics of memory, museum, art and critical heritage, migration and diaspora studies, critical race studies)
- Strong research profile, ideally demonstrated by participation in research projects and/or extensive fieldwork experience
- Relevant publications according to career stage

- Ability to work independently
- Team-spirit, collegiality, reliability and good communication skills, especially in intercultural contexts
- Willingness to engage with new ideas
- Experience in acquiring third-party funding
- Experience in organizing workshops and conferences
- Experience with social media and/or science communication
Your Duties and Responsibilities
- Independent research
- Collaboration in the research projects of the Chair, including the development of new research projects
- Teaching (5 SWS) and course administration in the relevant study programs on BA and MA levels (in German and English)
- Supervision of student theses (BA and MA)
- Participation in the public activities of the Chair
- Administrative tasks
- Active participation in the research group “Anthropology of Global Inequalities”
