PhD student in Sustainability Science
Ref. No. SU FV-2648-24
at Stockholm Resilience Centre. Closing date: 8 September 2024.
Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) is a research centre on resilience and sustainability science at Stockholm University. The Centre advances the scientific understanding of the complex, dynamic interactions of people and nature in the Biosphere; to train the next generation of sustainability researchers and leaders; and engage in collaborations with change agents. It is a joint initiative between Stockholm University and the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The SRC currently employs around 160 members of staff.
The SRC aims to foster new generations of researchers and academic leaders through our Resilience Research School. The school equips students with a theoretical and practical foundation in Sustainability Science with a focus on resilience in social-ecological systems. Students are encouraged to develop new approaches that integrate methods and concepts from the social, natural and applied sciences. Emphasis is placed on developing student ability to define a problem, develop research methods, and communicate research findings within international scientific and science-policy discussions.
Project description
We seek a PhD candidate to join the project TRANSMOD - “Building models of, with and for sustainability transformations” funded by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). The project studies why and how transformative change emerges (or not). It does so from two theoretical perspectives: a process-relational perspective (PRP) and complex adaptive systems (CAS). By bringing these two perspectives into dialogue, we aim to better account for the complex, entangled, social-ecological and political nature of transformations. Each perspective will be applied to historical cases of natural resource governance transformations and to ongoing change-making processes in the context of food systems in the Global South and North. We use multi-methods approaches with the aim to advance theory.
This PhD position will study transformative change from a process-relational perspective. PRP ground research on the assumption that reality is in constant becoming. The candidate will study how this becoming unfolds and generates potential for transformative change. The focus will be on the notion of attractors which is key for understanding change. We are interested in how to 1) conceptualize social-ecological attractors from a PRP drawing on scholarship such as (but not exclusively) agential realism (Barad) or assemblage theory (Deleuze/DeLanda); and how to 2) design and carry out corresponding empirical research for enhancing our understanding of how such attractors influence social-ecological transformations. Most likely, the empirical research will focus on food system transformation in South Africa, for which we will join ongoing work in transformation labs, to study how change processes unfold when actors collaboratively address complex problem situations.
The PhD candidate will be a participant of the TRANSMOD team and collaborate with project members such as Dr. Tilman Hertz (supervisor), Prof. Maja Schlüter (co-supervisor), Prof. María Mancilla, Dr. Michele-Lee Moore, Dr. Rodrigo Martinez, Dr. Jamila Haider. The candidate will also be part of the seslink group (www.seslink.org) and one or several of SRC’s research themes. The position will be based in Stockholm, but some international travel is expected.

- Excellent written and spoken English skills
In addition, any of the following would be desirable:
- Experience with methods that are compatible with process-relational approaches
- Familiarity with scholarship on social-ecological systems, transformations and complex adaptive systems
- Ability to communicate complex research concepts in intercultural and transdisciplinary settings and to engage with practitioners, especially in the South African context
