„How to Apply Anthropology? Challenges for an Academic Discipline“

Online Workshop, 04.-05.03.2021
Institut für Kulturanalyse, Abteilung Empirische Kulturwissenschaft / Kulturanthropologie
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alexandra Schwell
Sen. Scientist Dr. Janine Schemmer
Univ.-Ass. Lukas Milo Strauß, BA MA

This workshop aims at gathering academics and experts who share and discuss their experiences with applied anthropology/cultural analysis in the shape of study programs, as practitioners or as professionals. We are particularly interested in the link between academia and practice, in the challenges and pitfalls of teaching and conceptualizing applied anthropology programs at universities, and in academic cooperation with the non-academic world.

Programme

4 March 2021
14.00-15:00 Welcome and Introduction
15:00-18:00 Session 1: Anthropology’s Reluctance towards Applied Approaches
Academic Anthropology is traditionally reluctant towards the field of practice. In the first session, we aim at identifying factors contributing to this widespread skepticism. We seek to trace the problematic relationship between applied and academic anthropology and discuss its current repercussions.

Input speakers:
- Dan Podjed (ZRC SAZU Ljubljana)
- Mark Vacher (University of Copenhagen)

15:45-17:00 Working Groups
17:00-18:00 Plenary Discussion
18:15 Get-Together on WONDER.ME

5 March 2021
9:00 Welcome back
9:15-12:30 Session 2: Current Fields and Perspectives
In the second session, we intend to discuss current examples of applied anthropology that bridge the divide between the world of practice and academia. We also discuss analytical perspectives concerning methodological, theoretical, and ethical challenges and pitfalls as well as practical problems.

Input speakers:
- Jelena Tosic/Christa Markom (University of Vienna): Education
- Ana Ivasiuc (University of Marburg): Policy
- Barbara Grabher (University of Graz): Cultural Management and Events

10:00-11:45 Thematic Working Groups
11:45-12.30 Plenary Discussion: Working Group Results
12:30-13:30 Lunch Break
13:30-15:00 Session 3: Teaching Applied Anthropology
Third, the workshop seeks to explore how the cleavage between applied and academic anthropology can be fruitfully bridged and how synergies between both worlds can evolve. The workshop aims at formulating recommendations for Applied Anthropology as a discipline that dedicates itself to a practice-oriented while at the same time analytical and research-focused perspective.

Panel Discussion
Speakers:
- Tom O’Dell (University of Lund)
- Laurens Bakker (University of Amsterdam)
- Corina Enache/Rosalie Post (Namla Bootcamp, Amsterdam)
