Urban Investigation Mindscapes

Brief outline

The film gives an insight into the landscape of people’s understanding of and engagement with as well as challenges of mental health in Berlin - at a very particular political, social and cultural moment shaped by the effects of the pandemic. The film will not only show different perspectives on, experiences and understandings of mental health, but also attempts to incite change and hopeful learning by asking: What has helped you in difficult moments, or even in a crisis, before? The film aims at enabling conversations amongst and with ‘experts’ in the field of mental health, with an understanding of ‘expertise’ that is open to many forms of (self-)healing as well as lived experience. Including, but also going beyond interview situations, these conversations aim also to enable a dialogue / discussion between different kinds of agents who are part of the wide-ranging field of mental health in Berlin: between policy-makers and activists; cultural producers and researchers; between researchers of different backgrounds and disciplines (e.g. historians of science, social scientists and researchers with a biomedical approach), representatives of different communities. We approach Berlin both with regards to the archeology and topology of its landscape of mental health; historic and ethnographic research and perspectives go hand in hand.

Genesis

The film is part of the project Mindscapes that aims to support a transformation in how we understand, address and talk about mental health, and is initiated and funded by the Wellcome Trust. It builds on three ‘convenings’ which took place over the summer and fall 2021, during which around 40 people from Berlin and from the Wellcome Trust met in order to discuss questions related to mental health. As a result of these conversations, the film team decided to extend the format of the convenings to a film. They decided that the film should be dedicated to the question: What is mental health?
