Call for Abstracts: PhD Workshops on Sustainability

From March 30 - April 3, 2020 Freie Universität will host the fifth Spring Campus conference of the University Alliance for Sustainability. The conference provides a platform for academic exchange on sustainability topics with scientists from across the globe. We are inviting contributions for four research workshops and two PhD Workshops.

The Opening Day of the Spring Campus Conference is dedicated to the topic “Commitments for Future: Sustainability in Higher Education”. It will focus on three key questions:

  • How do universities as public institutions respond to calls for action from their community and stakeholders?
  • How do universities shape their governance structures in light of new participatory demands?
  • How does the current discourse impact the societal and political role of universities?

On March 31 and April 1 we offer four research and management workshops that facilitate inter- and transdisciplinary exchange:

  • Workshop I: "Financial Markets and Sustainable Development in Times of Climate Change" organized by Kurt Hübner (University of British Columbia), Berthold Kuhn (Freie Universität Berlin) and Itay Fishhendler (Hebrew University)
  • Workshop II: "From Innovation to Acceptance: Challenges and Potentials of a Sustainable Energy Transition" organized by Dr. Maria Rosaria di Nucci and Bettina Tacke (Freie Universität Berlin)
  • Workshop III: "Higher Education for Sustainability in Turbulent Times" organized by Prof. Inka Bormann, Dr. Mandy Singer-Brodowski and Nora Große (Freie Universität Berlin) and Robert Van Whynsberghe (University of British Columbia)
  • Workshop IV: "Universities on the Way to Climate Neutrality" organized by Andreas Wanke and Katrin Schweigel (Freie Universität Berlin)

Additionally, we invite contributions from PhD candidates for our two PhD Workshops running parallel from April 2-3, 2020.

PhD Workshop I “Unlocking and Transitioning - Strategies and Policies for a Sustainable World”, explores questions related to the politics of unlocking and transitioning. The topics covered in the workshop may include a diversity of questions including factors that drive disputes and social conflicts over adequate unlocking strategies; the political behaviours that actors undertake to influence political outcomes such as coalition building, narrative framing contests, lobbying; the negotiation or collaboration strategies that are used to address political debates, and determinants of policy choice. We invite PhD candidates specializing in sustainability-related research to apply. Abstracts (max. 500 words) outlining the aims and methods of individual papers should be sent to uas@fu.berlin.de. Please state your name, research topic, affiliation and full contact details. Deadline: February 25, 2020.

PhD Workshop II “Sustainable Development Research - an Interdisciplinary Chance or Challenge?” offers the opportunity to discuss the complex topic of sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective with an international group of PhD students and professors. Workshop participants develop a broader understanding of interdisciplinary research collaborations in the field of sustainable development and explore opportunities for joint interdisciplinary research projects. Participants are asked to provide a short abstract outlining their research and a reflection of how their topic interacts with one or more SDGs. Rather than presenting general overviews of sustainable development research, the workshop is interested in topical areas of individual dissertations, which should be reviewed in the light of the 17 SDGs. Abstracts (max. 500 words) should be sent to uas@fu.berlin.de. Please state your name, research topic, affiliation and full contact details. Deadline: February 25, 2020.
