We invite two or three scholars currently working on the rise of right-wing extreme parties and groups in the United States and Europe to join our round table discussion at AAA 2019.  We would like to broaden the scope of the analysis with additional round table participants and/or discussants.  Please contact Pat Heck (pheck@sewanee.edu) or Kate Donahue (kdonahue@plymouth.edu) before March 20 if you are interested or would like more details.  Thank you. Please see our abstract below:

TWO YEARS LATER:  CYCLES OF HATRED AND RAGE:  RIGHT-WING PARTIES IN EUROPE AND THE U.S.

This round table discussion addresses new data augmenting original research first presented at the AAA in 2017, and expands upon it. That session concerned the increasing popularity of authoritarian and/or anti-democratic parties and regimes in Europe, and linked them to concurrent political development in the United States. Here we analyze political events of the past two years. We are seeing an international political struggle engendered by forces that deride democracy, favor nationalism and racial exclusion, and seek to deny basic human rights on the one hand, while growing numbers oppose these movements. What has changed? What remains the same? Which side seems to be winning, and why? What theoretical tools can best evaluate these and similar current political developments in the struggle for more effective European and American democracy and the rule of law?
