The department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology conducts education and research on many of the complex contexts that characterize today´s globalized world. The department has about 40 employees. We are a strong research driven environment having two prominent research environments that include professors, researchers, postdoctoral researchers and several doctoral students. At the department, first, second and third cycles in cultural anthropology and ethnology are taught at two campuses (Uppsala and Visby). The department is looking for one to two postdoctoral researchers in cultural anthropology, 100%, from October 1, 2022 with placement in Uppsala. The successful applicant is expected to conduct research that contributes to and develops the department’s research environment.

Duties
The task is mainly to develop and conduct research. In addition to this, there is teaching corresponding to one course per semester and certain research administrative tasks. Teaching and research administration comprises a maximum of 20 percent of the scope of the employment.

The research can be newly started and/or consist of reworking a doctoral dissertation into a monograph published by an international publisher. The successful applicant is expected to actively participate in seminars and other activities in Uppsala, be a resource for the graduate students, and contribute to the development of a vibrant research environment.

Requirements
PhD degree in culture/social anthropology or foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in culture/social anthropology, which the employer deems relevant for the research assignment.

The PhD degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier; The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Please note that anyone who has previously been employed as a postdoctoral researcher at Uppsala University for more than a year cannot be employed as a postdoctoral researcher again.

We are looking for engaged candidates who will contribute to the development of the department's research environment. The position requires the ability to work in a team, as well as to work independently. You should have an interest in and ability to make academic contacts around the world, as well as an ability to formulate research questions in a way that stimulates international interest. You should also have the ability to publish in relevant scientific forums and communicate research questions and results to a broad audience.

Assessment criteria/Ranking
The assessment of the applications is based on the applicants' ability to conduct independent, creative and innovative research of anthropological significance. For the purpose of evaluation, more emphasis will be placed on the quality and relevance of the scholarly work than on the number of publications. 

The position requires the ability to work independently, good interpersonal skills, the ability to establish academic contacts around the world, the ability to formulate research questions in a way that arouses international interest, the ability to publish in relevant scholarly forums, and the ability to convey the research questions and results to a wider audience.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date 1 October 2022 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
