At the University of Göttingen – Public Law Foundation –, Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS), research group “Culture and Society” (Prof. Eisenlohr) there are two positions as

PhD Research Fellows (all genders welcome)
- Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L (50%) -


to be filled. The positions are limited to 3 years with the option for extension.

Starting date is 15 June 2022. The positions are meant to qualify young academics and offer the chance to earn a PhD. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (TV-L Entgeltgruppe 13). 50% of a full position correspond to 19,9 working hours per week.

The research group Society and Culture in Modern India, which is headed by Prof. Patrick Eisenlohr, draws on theories and methods from the disciplines of anthropology and sociology as well as media studies in research on South Asia and South Asian diaspora-related themes. You are expected to develop your own research agenda, contribute to the research projects of the group and to teach. Within a research-based, interdisciplinary and international environment, you have wide opportunities to develop your skills.

Your profile

  • Successful completion of a Master degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology, South Asian Studies or another relevant discipline.
  • Interest in one or several of the following topics: media, the digital, and religion; aesthetic and performative dimensions of citizenship and belonging; urbanity and the sonic; Indian Ocean connections.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research.
  • Excellent English skills are expected
