The Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main is one of the largest universities in Germany with around 48,000 students and with about 5,000 employees. The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Goethe University Frankfurt offers the following position:

Research fellow (m/f/d) (predoc)
(E13 TV-G-U, 65% part-time)


The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement (TV-G-U) applicable to Goethe University. The position offers a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2027, in association with the research project “Humour as an epistemic practice of the political present (
No-
Joke
)”, which is funded by an ERC Starting Grant to Professor Mirco Göpfert. The position can be filled as soon as possible.


Required Qualifications

excellent completed academic university degree (Master) in social and cultural anthropology or closely related fields

experience with participant observation and a dedicated interest in the study of humour

eagerness to engage in the creative (also experimental) integration of artistic modes of inquiry into your own research (previous experience with artistic  modes of expression and/or inquiry would be desirable)

very good command of English (working language in the project)


The project group is interested in applicants capable of developing and conducting a subproject on satirical political parties or satirical forms of activism, with a clear accent on the study of humorous practices through participant observation and creative, collaborative research (instead of rather distant discourse and media analysis).

We are looking for candidates who will take part in our effort to turn the overall project into an environment for creative and collective learning. As part of the project, funding is available for ethnographic field research, the preparation of publications, and the participation in seminars, workshops, conferences, and festivals. The new team around Mirco Göpfert offers a dynamic, creative and internationally oriented space for research and collective learning.
