Your tasks

The Chair of Urban Studies at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) is looking to hire a Research Assistant / PhD Candidate (70%) interested in pursuing an ethnographic PhD project in urban studies in Southern Africa.

Your duties:

  • Completion of a PhD project within four to five years
  • Support of the chair of urban studies (max. 10 percent)
  • Participation in the PhD program Organisation Studies and Cultural Theory; attendance of scholarly conferences


The place of work will be St Gallen, except for field research periods.

Your profile

The candidate must have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent grades in master degree, preferably in the area of social anthropology
  • Experiences with ethnographic research methods
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills; German language skills are a plus, but not mandatory
  • Familiarity with a non-colonial language spoken in the research area is a plus

The Chair of Urban Studies pursues rigorous ethnographic research in Southern Africa, including the region's global interdependencies to other regions of the world. Candidates should apply with a research project that fits into this field. The successful applicant will be part of a lively environment of various research-focused chairs at the SHSS and will participate in the Competence Center for African Research. The starting salary is approx. 60'000 CHF / annum (pay grade F4/3).
