Am 10. und 11. April 2019 wird im Senatsaal der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin die Verleihung des Georg-Simmel-Preises und des Hartmut-Häußermann-Preises stattfinden. Mit diesen Würdigungen will das Georg-Simmel-Zentrum für Metropolenforschung junge Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen von Bachelor bis zur Dissertation fördern. Das Georg-Simmel-Zentrum für Metropolenforschung ist die interdisziplinäre Koordinationsplattform für Stadtforschung an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Als Träger fungieren das Geographische Institut, das Institut für Europäische Ethnologie und das Institut für Sozialwissenschaften.Mit dem Georg-Simmel-Preis werden Studierende ausgezeichnet, die ihren Bachelor-, Master-, Magister- oder Diplomabschluss im Jahr 2018 vollendet haben. Der Hartmut-Häußermann-Preis, gestiftet von Frau Dr. Ruth Jacobs, würdigt herausragende Monografien, die für eine interdisziplinäre, aufklärerische und sozial orientierte Stadtforschung stehen.
Im Programm der Studierendenkonferenz werden sechs verschiedene Panels prominente Themen der Stadtforschung behandeln:
Das Panel „Staatshandel macht Stadt“ problematisiert die Rolle von staatlichen Institutionen in der Formung städtischer Lebensrealitäten. „Städtische Ungleichheiten“ fragt nach dem Umgang von Bewohner*innen mit Ausgrenzung in polarisierten und diversifizierten städtischen Kontexten. Drei Panels fokussieren konkret auf „Städtische Transformationen“: das Panel „Umkämpfte Ortsidentitäten“ beschäftigt sich mit Erinnerungspolitiken und Branding, das Panel „Zur Smartness (neuer) Technologien“ setzt sich mit der Gegenwart und dem Einfluss von Technologien sowie Techniken auf die Konstituierung von Stadt auseinander und das Panel „Geplanter und Gelebter Raum“ betrachtet das Zusammenspiel und die Widersprüche zwischen den Perspektiven von Stadtplaner*innen und Stadtbewohner*innen. Das sechste Panel beschäftigt sich mit „Städtischen Un/Sicherheiten“. Dieses geht der Frage nach, wie Gefühle der (Un)sicherheit entstehen, und wie diese politisch genutzt werden, um Ausgrenzung von Gruppen zu legitimieren.
Die im Anschluss an die Konferenz stattfindende Festveranstaltung am Nachmittag des 11. Aprils 2019 wird eingeleitet mit der Harmut-Häußermann-Lecture. Prof. Mario L. Small (Harvard University) spricht zur Rolle von institutionellen Kontexten für soziale Unterstützungsbeziehungen und städtischen Zusammenhalt. Sein Vortrag wird kommentiert von Prof. Talja Blokland (Humboldt Universität zu Berlin). Nach der Diskussion erfolgt die Preisverleihung. Bei Wein und Häppchen findet die Konferenz ihren feierlichen Ausklang.

The Students’ Conference and the Hartmut-Häußermann Award – Save the Date
On April 10th and 11th, 2019, two academic prices will be awarded in the Senate Chamber of Humboldt-University: the Georg-Simmel Prize and the Hartmut-Häußermann Prize. With these prizes, the Georg-Simmel Center for Metropolitan Studies seeks to encourage and foster early career researchers as well as graduate and undergraduate students. The Georg-Simmel Center for Metropolitan Studies is an interdisciplinary institute at Humboldt-University. Currently, the Geography Department, the Institute of European Ethnology and the Institute of Sociology are the foundation of the Georg-Simmel Center. While the Georg-Simmel Prize awards students who finished their graduate and undergraduate degree in 2018, the Hartmut-Häußermann Prize, which is funded by Dr. Ruth Jacobs, is offered in recognition of an outstanding monography of early career researchers with an interdisciplinary and social approach as well as a relevant contribution to the field of the urban studies.
In the program of the student conference, six different panels deal with important topics of the urban studies:
The Panel “Actions of the State and the Production of the City” problematizes the role of state institutions in relation to the creation of urban realities. “Urban Inequalities” enquires into the responses of city dwellers to exclusion in polarized and diversified urban contexts. Three panels specifically focus on “Urban Transformation”: the panel “Contested Identities of Place” deals with politics of collective memory and city branding, the panel “About the Smartness of (New) Technologies” discusses the current influence of technologies as well as techniques on the constitution of the city. The panel “Planned and Lived Space” analyzes the interactions and contradictions between planners’ and the dwellers’ perspective regarding space. Finally, the sixth panel deals with “Urban In/Securities”. It asks how (in)security feelings arise and how these are used politically to legitimize the exclusion of specific groups.
After the conference, the festive event on April 11 will be introduced by the Hartmut-Häußermann lecture, which will be held by Prof. Mario L. Small (Harvard University). He will talk about the role of institutional contexts for social relations of support and urban cohesion. Talja Blokland (Humboldt-University) will comment on his presentation. After a discussion, the prices will be awarded and the celebration will be concluded with some wine and snacks.
