The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Public Anthropology at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in Anthropology by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter is required. Anthropology at York is committed to decolonizing its curriculum and we seek a candidate whose research and teaching are grounded in social justice and decolonial perspectives. The successful applicant will demonstrate pedagogical expertise and innovation in teaching and will work to enhance the Department’s focus on engaged anthropology. The position will involve undergraduate teaching as well as graduate teaching and supervision. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Applicants must have a clearly articulated program of research and a record of accomplishment appropriate to their stage of career in the areas of public anthropology, community engagement, design anthropology, activism, and/or advocacy. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level. Preference will be given to candidates who bring a critical perspective on issues of public interest, which may include climate change, digital publics, environment, food, human rights, labor, law, work, among others.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence appropriate to their stage of career as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications or forthcoming publications; research creation; conference presentations; awards and accolades. In the cover letter, they must address how their research intersects with public anthropology.

The applicant will provide evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching appropriate to their stage of career at the undergraduate and graduate levels through: statement of teaching philosophy; list of new or proposed courses relevant to public anthropology; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning.
