freiburg film forum: africa | america | asia | oceania

A window to the world is our motto at the freiburger film forum, where we look at the realities of people from different cultures and situations in life every two years.

Beschreibung

The festival highlights directors who use a variety of artistic methods to capture people’s everyday lives. After a preliminary survey of this year’s films, the freiburger film forum has chosen the theme of “concurrent inequalities,” because several film projects have set themselves the task of representing different forms of global asymmetry within relationships and societies.

Filmmakers who spend one year or more working on their projects create an immediacy that no other medium can deliver so convincingly. This is impressively demonstrated by Lisbet Holtedahl, a retired professor of visual anthropology at the University of Tromsø who will be a guest at this year’s festival. Her two outstanding film projects WIVES and THE CHATEAU are the result of many years of research in Cameroon. While the first film is based on her observations of how love and dependency are understood in a polygamous Islamic family, her second work offers never seen before insight into how feudal structures of dominance are established, as seen in the example of an extremely successful and influential industrialist from northern Cameroon.

The call for films for the students’ platform is closed, and we would like to thank the many students who registered and for all the interest in the student section of the freiburger film forum. In the coming weeks, the jury of five experts will carefully consider all the submitted films and make a selection.
