The Centre for Gender Studies, Karlstad University announces two GEXcel research stipends.

The objective of the stipends is to give two Swedish or international scholars an opportunity to collaborate with CGF in the form of joint research applications.

Applications are invited for two stipends to visit the Centre for Gender Studies at Karlstad University, Sweden for four weeks. The selected scholars will work on a research application in collaboration with one or more researchers at the centre. They are also expected to be present at the centre for the duration of their stipend, working on the application, participating in feed-back seminars and taking part in CGF’s activities.

The expected outcome of the stipend is to generate a competitive application for research funding for a project hosted by CGF and Karlstad University. The stipend holders are responsible for driving the application process from start till submission. A stipend holder acting as the principal applicant will be formally affiliated as a researcher at CGF, enjoying  access to resources at the university and having the opportunity to apply to Swedish funding agencies for three years. Karlstad University holds the right to the funding application written as part of the GEXcel stipend.

A majority of academic research in Sweden is funded by external resources, granted by a number agencies and foundations in Sweden (e.g. The Swedish Research Council, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Wallenberg foundation) with varying deadlines for the applications. The stipends aim to give two scholars an opportunity to collaborate with CGF on a joint research application.

Applicants for the GEXcel stipend should frame their applications within one or several of CGF’s research areas: Transgender Studies; Gender, Health and Technology; Masculinity Studies; and Action for Organizational Change. In particular, we are seeking applications for the following themes: “masculinity, health and biopolitics”, “hardcore/toxic masculinity”, “trans history”, and “queer death studies”.

Applications should include:

  • CV (max 3 pages)
  • List of publications
  • List of externally financed research projects with indication of role
  • Abstract of a research proposal
  • Research Proposal (maximum 3 pages, Times New Roman 12);
  • Bio (max. 300 words)
  • Reflection on the relevance of the project to CGF’s research fields and/or the specialised topic, and suggestion on researchers that are potential application partners for the project at CGF (maximum 1 page, Times New Roman 12)

Size of stipends:
Stipend for junior scholars and postdoctoral researchers: SEK 35 000 (before tax)
Stipend for senior scholars and professors or professor emerita/emeritus: SEK 55 000 (before tax).
In addition to the stipend, accommodation and travel costs will be covered.

GEXcel is a collaboration between the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF) at Karlstad University, Tema Genus at Linköping University and the Centre for Feminist Social Studies at Örebro University. The Collegium is the permanent follow-up of the GEXcel Centre of Gender Excellence.
