THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF VALUES

MASTERCLASS with JOEL  ROBBINS
(Sigrid Rausing Professor of Social Anthropology, Cambridge)

29 June 2018, 10am - 30 June 2018, 4pm

This masterclass will take up the development of an anthropological theory of values. The first day will be devoted to exploring key themes in study of values both within and beyond anthropology. A first section will consider the history of the notion of values and will look at early theories of values that emerged at the origin of the social sciences as distinct fields, including the Marxist theory of value and the neo-Kantian theory of values that deci-sively influenced Max Weber. A second section will take up structural theo-ries of values and will consider in particular the work of Durkheim, Dumont, and Isaiah Berlin. A third section will consider subjective theories of values, attending particularly to the role of values in shaping human motivations, and will return to considering other aspects of the work of Durkheim and Weber. A final section, on the morning of the second day, will consider the prospects for synthesising structural and subjective approaches to value. Each section will be introduced briefly by Joel Robbins. But a short reading list will also be distributed for each section and we will devote ample time to discussion of the various topics raised by the readings. The remainder of the second day will be devoted to working through ethnographic materials brought by the participants to explore how they might be analysed in value-theoretic terms.

There will be no charges, but places are limited and registration is required. In order to register, please submit an abstract of your research of 250 words max and questions that you would like to discuss. Please send all correspondence to Holger Jebens (Jebens[at]em.uni-frankfurt.de). The deadline is 15 April 2018.

This Masterclass is organised by the Frobenius Research Institute with support from the Hahn-Hissink'sche Frobenius Foundation.
