VANDA is the successor of the former TAGE DER KSA and is a joint effort between the Institute of Social Anthropology off the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ISA), the Weltmuseum, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Vienna (IKSA). It is intended to take place biannually and will be organized each time by one of these institutions. IKSA will be the host for 2018.

VANDA is an international conference that is particularly interested in the active involvement of young researchers. It therefore includes a YOUNG SCHOLARS FORUM and local students will have the opportunity to provide input by being part of the STUDENT ORGANIZING COMMITTEE.

The CALL FOR SESSIONS has just started (the deadline for submissions is February 1, 2018) and offers several session formats and network opportunities. For the interaction between young scholars and experienced ones, the organizers would like to encourage you to participate in the VANDA MENTORS' EXCHANGE, which was created to connect mentors with mentees.

International Conference Formats

VANDA offers 5 session formats (90 min per slot) for researchers (PhD and onwards); the organizers encourage you also to serve as a mentor (scholars at least 5 years after their PhD) for the Young Scholars's Forum (see below); session language is English or German; session abstracts should not be longer than 350 words.

CLASSIC offers presentations (max. 15 min) and time for discussion at the end or between presentations.

PANEL offers short presentations (max. 8 min) and a subsequent panel discussion with all presenters.

TABLE offers a (literal) roundtable with a maximum of 8 participants. A specific questionnaire should be circulated in advance by the session organizer(s).

TEAMS offers an open session format for research teams to present their research in theoretical and practical terms.

FREE offers a session format of your choice (other than the ones mentioned above), please add a description of the format to your abstract.

Young Scholars' Forum Formats

VANDA offers 3 sessions formats (90min per slot) for junior researchers/organizers (from MA to PhD); session language is English or German; session abstracts should not be longer than 350 words.

MENTORED CLASSIC follows the above mentioned CLASSIC pattern, but includes 2 or more experienced researchers (PhD+5years) as mentors who offer guidance and feedback on the presentations during the session. Mentors and students may use the VANDA mentors’ exchange.

INSIDE PRACTICE is a format where 2 or more experienced researchers (PhD+5years) offer insight into academic and fieldwork practice to interested young scholars and students. It is an informal questions and answers session after a short introduction of the speaker. Young scholars are encouraged to request experts on specific fields of expertise. Experienced researchers are invited to offer their practical work experience in academia and the field. To that purpose you may also use the VANDA mentors’ exchange.

THEORY & METHOD is a format where 2 or more experienced researchers (PhD+5years) offer introductory talks on the interaction between theory and method in their academic work followed by an open discussion with young scholars and students. Young scholars are encouraged to request experts on specific fields of expertise. Experienced researchers are invited to offer their practical advice. To that purpose you may use the VANDA mentors’ exchange.
